We have been working on new bags for our greens for several years and we have finally found a bag which works very well!! Manufactured in Montreal, they are “breathable” bags like the old Ziplock bags and can keep product as fresh as the day picked for up to two weeks (not that anyone would keep product that long). The first batch of bags had about 30% defective ziplocks, though, so if the ziplock tears when you open the bag, please use a twist-tie to close. A new batch arriving very soon has corrected this defect. And even the very tender micro-greens have an amazing shelf-life in these bags! What use is it for us to grow these wonderful greens and not be able to get them to our customers in as good a shape as when they were harvest.
The bags are not biodegradable but are recyclable. Please reuse them yourself with other vegetables but do not return them to us.
Recyclable where? Ottawa doesn’t have recycling for plastic bags … can you recycle them at your farm (and the other plastic bags)?
Yes, they do keep the produce fresh, but I don’t find them reusable – they rip easily and are hard to wash.
Thanks!
The first batch of these bags had a defective ziplock but we decided to use them anyway. If they tear on you, just close them with a twist-tie. The next run of the bags will be much tougher with a great ziplock.
Packaging is always an issue for us and our priorities are green, cost-effective, and long shelf-life. Although recyclable was not our first option, there is not another product available yet which provides the long-term storage capacity of these bags.
And since we started using them for our micro-greens, we have not have email about spoiled micro-greens! Our testing has shown that micro-greens can last up to three weeks in the new packaging!
