This is a question we get all the time at Bryson Farms and while the answer should be simple, that’s not always the case. At the most basic level, organic means that something is grown or raised in the most natural manner possible without any chemical input.
At Bryson Farms that means that we never use pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, genetically modified organisms or inject our beef with hormones. We grow our vegetables “naturally”, using the finest heirloom, non-GMO seeds. While this means that sometimes produce takes longer to mature, we think it’s worth the wait.
How do you know if the product you’re buying is really organic?
In 2009, the Canadian Government introduced a logo, which you’ll find on the Bryson Farms website that reads ‘Canada Organic.’ If you’re buying produce that doesn’t bear this label, then it’s not certified organic. It’s as simple as that! To learn more about the Canadian Organic Standards and Regulations, please visit the Canadian Organic Growers’ website.
Here’s a quick list of things to keep in mind the next time you’re grocery shopping:
- Local and organic aren’t the same thing! Just because something was grown nearby doesn’t mean it’s organic. If you’re at a market, always ask the producer if their products are Certified Canada Organic.
- Be wary of products that claim they’re “100% Organic”. According to law, this claim isn’t permitted in Canada. All products with 95% and higher organic content are considered organic.
- Be prepared for certified organic food to cost slightly more. In order to do something well, sometimes it takes a little longer. At Bryson Farms, we take the time to grow food the way it was meant to be grown.
